Union! Discipline! for Socialism! by Carles Fontserè, 1936
Carles Fontserè i Carrió was born in an ultra-conservative Carlist family in Barcelona in 1916. After the start of the attempted coup, he joined the Sindicat de Dibuixants Professionals (SDP - Union of Professional Illustrators) and designed many posters, including ‘Libertad!’ and ‘Treballa per als que Lluiten’.
He fought in the International Brigades and later crossed the Pyrenees to France where he escaped from the concentration camp he had been placed in. He fought with the Resistance against Nazi Germany. Between 1948 and 1973 he lived in Mexico and New York before returning to Spain. He worked as an illustrator, comic book artist, set designer, poster artist, and photographer. He died in Spain in 2007.

The poster was commissioned by the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) - Workers' Party of Marxist Unification.
The POUM was founded in Barcelona in 1935 from parties that had split from the PCE in opposition to Stalinism. While Marxist, it followed a reformist approach.
At its formation, the POUM was bigger than the PCE and allied internationally to the London Bureau of socialist and centrist Marxist parties, which included Independent Labour Party – and hence how George Orwell came to join the POUM militia.
Following the events of May 1937 when there was street fighting in Barcelona, the PCE ensured the POUM was suppressed, accusing it of having links to fascists. PCE agents tortured and murdered the POUM’s leader, Andrés Nin, and others.
