The Commonweal, the official journal of the Socialist League, was founded in 1885 as a platform for revolutionary international socialism. Under the leadership of William Morris, it featured contributions from prominent figures such as Ernest Belfort Bax and Eleanor Marx.
The May 1890 issue included a striking illustration by Walter Crane, titled Solidarity of Labour (also available as an A3 poster), alongside an extract from Morris’ serialised utopian novel, News from Nowhere.
The journal faced turmoil after Morris resigned in 1890, passing the editorship to anarchist David Nicoll.
Nicoll’s tenure was short-lived—he was arrested and imprisoned for 18 months after publishing an article in support of the Walsall Anarchists.
The Commonweal declined in influence and ceased publication in 1892. Undeterred and with declining mental health following his experiences in gaol, Nicoll launched his own paper, The Anarchist, which he later renamed The Commonweal (1898–1907) in a nod to the original publication.
