P.O.U.M. El Socialismo es la Liberación
P.O.U.M. Socialism is Liberation by Lienas, an engraver and lithographer in Barcelona.
Commissioned by the Partido Obrero de Unificación Marxista (POUM) - Workers' Party of Marxist Unification.
The POUM was founded in Barcelona in 1935 from parties that had split from the PCE in opposition to Stalinism. While Marxist, it followed a reformist approach and had some association with Trotsky, which led Stalin to class it as Trotskyist.
At its formation, the POUM was bigger than the PCE and allied internationally to the ‘London Bureau’ of socialist and centrist Marxist parties, which included the Independent Labour Party – and hence how George Orwell came to join the POUM militia.
Following the events of May 1937 when there was street fighting in Barcelona, the PCE ensured the POUM was suppressed, accusing it of having links to fascists. PCE agents tortured and murdered the POUM’s leader, Andrés Nin, and others.
