Keir Hardie - Labour Pioneer Special Election Edition
Keir Hardie - Labour Pioneer Special Election Edition, January 1906
Keir Hardie, born 1856 in Lanarkshire, was a miner, trade unionist, politician and a founder member of the Labour Party.
He started work in the mines at the age of ten. He was a talented speaker and became a spokesperson for his fellow miners. He was elected leader of his trade union in 1879, organising strikes in 1880 and 1881. From 1886 he was a full-time union organiser in the Ayrshire Miners' Union.
While he initially supported the Liberal Party, he believed the working class needed its own political party and in 1888 helped to form the Scottish Labour Party.
He won his first Parliamentary seat, West Ham South, in 1892 as an independent candidate.
In 1893 he helped form the Independent Labour Party.
He lost the West Ham seat in 1895.
In 1896 he attended the International Socialist Workers and Trade Union Congress in London, alongside Tom Mann, Peter Kropotkin, Ben Tillett, Louise Michel and many other great names of the period. At the Congress, Walter Crane handed out his "Cartoons for the Cause" to delegates.
In 1900 he was elected as an MP - this time for Merthyr Tydfil in South Wales and was involved in setting up the Labour Representation Committee, which later became the Labour Party and became the Party's first parliamentary leader in 1906.
He died in 1915 while trying to organise a general strike against the war.
