Free the Soledad Brothers
Free the Soledad Brothers by the Soledad Brothers Defence Committee, 1970
In January 1970, following the murder of three black inmates in Soledad Prison by a prison guard shooting from a look out tower, the guard's actions were found to be justifiable homicide. Within thirty minutes of the verdict a different prison guard was found dying, having been beaten and thrown off a third floor balcony. Three inmates, George Jackson, Fleeta Drumgo and John Cluchette were accused of his murder.
The Soledad Brothers Defence Committee was formed to campaign on their behalf and had many famous supporters, including Angela Davis.
George Jackson died before the trial during a riot in the prison during which three guards and two prisoners (who were suspected of being grasses) were killed. Jackson was shot in the exercise yard, from a lookout tower.
The other two Soledad Brothers were found not guilty on the grounds of lack of evidence.

Racism is deeply entrenched in our societies and cultures, and implanted in our minds—both consciously and subconsciously. It reinforces and perpetuates systemic inequalities, discrimination, and oppression, serving as a tool wielded by the ruling elite and their enablers to divide and control us.
The fight against racism demands relentless effort: continuous learning, recognising and challenging our own unconscious bias, standing up to racists and taking action in favour of justice.
The Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement, born in 2013 following the acquittal of Trayvon Martin’s murderer, has grown into a powerful global force advocating for racial justice, equality, collective safety and community-based support.
We support the aims of the BLM movement.
