The Brigate Rosse (Red Brigades) were an Italian Marxist-Leninist urban guerrilla group active from the 1970s to the 1980s. They sought to spark a communist revolution in Italy through armed struggle, carrying out assassinations (nearly 50 killings), kidnappings, bank robberies, and sabotage. Their targets included industrialists, bankers, politicians, trade unionists, and even members of the Italian Communist Party (PCI)—whom they saw as complicit in maintaining the capitalist system.
The Red Brigades emerged during a period of intense industrial unrest in Italy, amid fears that the country could fall to a right-wing coup, as had happened in Greece (1967) and Chile (1973) - resulting in mass arrests and murders. They viewed themselves as a vanguard against fascism and imperialism, rejecting both the reformist PCI and other militant leftist groups like Lotta Continua, which they considered insufficiently revolutionary.
Their best known operation was the 1978 kidnapping and murder of Aldo Moro, a former Prime Minister and key Christian Democrat leader who had been negotiating a historic coalition with the PCI. Despite widespread appeals, the Italian government refused to negotiate, and after 54 days in captivity, Moro’s body was discovered in the boot of a car in Rome.
